Brief profile

Matthias Peter studied biochemistry at the ETH Zurich. He received his PhD in 1991 with Professor Erich Nigg at the Swiss Cancer Research Institute (ISREC) in Epalinges/Lausanne.

Following five years of post-doctoral research (1991 – 1996) at the University of California in San Francisco (UCSF), Matthias Peter received a Career Development Award (START) from the Swiss National Science Foundation in 1996 and was appointed assistant professor at ISREC at the University of Lausanne. In 2002 he became senior group director at ISREC. In the same year, Matthias Peter took over as professor of biochemistry at the ETH in Zurich.

The work of his research team was recognized in 1998 with the awarding of the New Talent Prize of the Horten Foundation. In 2001 he became a member of the European Molecular Biology Organization, EMBO. He is also a founding member of the joint centre of competence for “System Physiology and Metabolic Illnesses“of the ETH and the University of Zurich.

Matthias Peter has been a member of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF professorships) and of the Swiss Science and Technology Council since 2003.

Matthias Peter was born in Winterthur on 14 September 1962.
